On the night of Aug 20th, intense storms developed in north central South Dakota, along with an ongoing mesoscale convective complex in south central North Dakota. Skies cleared out to the west and offered a chance to capture some sprites from the northern activity. I did a time-lapse from western South Dakota and captured not only sprites, but also observed convectively-generated air glow gravity waves which are luminosity ripples in the air glow region which is present due to chemiluminescence near the mesopause around 85 km. These ripples are thought to be caused by the cyclical overshooting updrafts of strong thunderstorm complexes which push momentum upward in a localized area. These air glow gravity waves, which are currently being studied by lightning research scientists, are believed to be capable of modifying the luminosity patterns of transient luminous events such as elves and halos. Great set of images!!

These are terrific photos! Im unsure as to the nature of gravity waves being generated by air convection? All the other observed effects; e.g., the sprites; are electrical events, and including the airglows ionization aurora. The solar winds are Birkeland currents from the anode (Sun) to our ground; literally. However, if the waves observed are gravitationally changed, there must be data to show these changes in gravity for them. Are there any observations of changes in gravity?

Not only excellent earth-based imagery but also galactic and extra-galactic as well. The Andromeda galaxy M-31 is the smudge of light diagonally up to the right of the sprites, as well as the double cluster in Perseus above and slightly left of them. - The stars will almost always validate the image. Thank you - waw -

See http://press.uchicago.edu/books/AMSweather/AMS_09_explorations2.html

for an explanation on Atmospheric Gravity Waves.

Thanks for the link. Still, there is no explanation of what Air glow gravity waves happen to be except it is caused by convection. My estimation would be that positive ions from the Sun form a double-layer at the boundary of the magnetosphere which attracts negative ions upward to their double-layer and as the charge differential between the positive solar wind and the ionosphere continues to build, it eventually discharges from the ionosphere to earth-ground. The glow is an effect which reveals the atmospheric air waves, and along with the sprites, elves, blue jets, glow and other phenomenon. The termination of the solar wind transfer of electricity into our atmosphere is the lightning stroke(s) to earth-ground, which follow the storms (that weather and tornadoes being another effect of the solar wind/radiation from the Sun). As for Gravitational Waves in the fabric of Space/Time ... try this link: http://www.sjcrothers.plasmaresources.com/Ricci.html, and wonder what there is about space that can be bent ....
