I battled with cloud all night to try and capture some meteors from midnight until 4am, but at 3.30am this stunning meteor streaked in under the cloud from the north east and blazed across the sky…Wow!

I am pretty sure this meteor is completely unrelated to the Geminids meteor shower as it is pointing towards and not radiating away from Gemini (but I may be wrong perhaps it is a Geminid) the constellation above the meteor is Leo, The Lion (We see it upside down here in Australia)

So this pretty meteor may have photo-bombed the Geminid meteors and rewarded me with a beautiful picture after all :-)

Photo taken with a Canon 700D camera and a Canon 18-55mm lens, ISO 1600 and exposure was 14 seconds. I have cropped the image just to show the meteor with its pretty colours as it came through the atmosphere.

You did better than me, Noeleen; I saw 7 or 8 Geminids over and hour last night, but none bright enough crossing the camera field of view. As you suspect, this isnt a Geminid, just a sporadic meteor. Nice little terminal flare.

Thank you Duncan for explaining about the meteor and yes, the cloud was a shame but this beautiful meteor made up for it :-)
