I saw this vertical beam near sunset near Manteca CA on Friday May 4. Since STEVE was active, I was wondering if this was a manifestation of it.

Hi Jack, this is a Sun pillar - light scattered off ice crystals in the atmosphere. See https://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/pillar.htm

Sun pillar! Aurora isnt visible during the day.
