In my timelapse images of northern lights Sunday night there is an odd, white blob that appears to move from near center frame to the left edge in just under 3 minutes real time, just after the aurora started. Anyone have any ideas what this might be? Nikon D750 with 24mm Rokinon lens, consecutive 15-second exposures with 2-second delay between frames.

I cant entirely rule out a light leak from the camera viewfinder, but I dont think thats it. I dont often block the viewfinder at night, but I only turn my headlamp on when necessary, and I make a point of not shining my headlamp towards the cameras. I was tending a southward camera at the time so I wasnt looking north when these frames were recorded, unfortunately.

There is actually a larger but dimmer blob that immediately preceded this one. You can see both on the timelapse video on my business FB page at:[0]=68.ARCyQXHtQiTBp76DdJ0SFGYVWXjnwMtdtspyq7lbFSZJ61Fu-gRIZmnIfcFZJEOX4ChfHMwg1A2HeUi8L0redSI79tm_2NeQTdg9kqyOCWazzPAfMiCMsUmt2V7T6fhXQm5RVeAvVdlUkOS7JTzGMOG57O6-oP-1L1WIbBlgEriAu4Xevz58DQ

Wow! Thank you for sharing these pictures. Are you the one that got the proton arc at glacier park a couple years ago?

Possible rocket plume/out gassing? Thrusters?

It does look like a rocket plume, but as far as I know western Canada hasnt fired any rockets towards the northern U.S.
