As my last attempt at photographing both of Mars moons only resulted in Deimos, I tried again last night, slightly changing my setup.
And this time I managed to get the even more elusive Phobos at mag. 11.8 , separated only by 11 arcseconds from the blindingly bright Mars at mag. -1.28.

I have inserted the orbiting path of both moons to show how much closer Phobos is to the planet compared to Deimos and also that Phobos is on track.

So why doesnt Deimos show in this 2 frame-animation?
It was positioned bellow the planet at a separation of 15 arcseconds at that time and being a full magnitude dimmer (almost 13) it was just invisible.

Mars was at an altitude of only 24°

Telescope: William-Optics FLT 110 (TEC optics) f/6.5 and FL 715 mm with a 4x Powermate.

when I get into my projects I completely lose track of time, another way to say that I am determined, I guess.
And I always try to surprise myself so I hope I will continue to surprise you as well :-)

Brilliant work and what a great project. I remember seeing an article by a guy imaging Sirius B, he used a mask, sort of hexagon shaped hartmann mask, that helped with contrast. It just went around the very edge of the corrector plate and enabled him to get his image. Maybe you might also find that useful and improve further the contrast between the two. I think tho he used a schmidt cass.

I have tried unsuccessfully to photograph Sirius B for the last 4 years. From my latitude it does not even reach 14 degrees above the horizon.
I have had some mail correspondence with the author of the photograph you are referring to, I guess it is here .

Next winter I will try using the experience I have acquired especially photographing Phobos and if nothing else works I will try with a hexagon mask.
