Details:
Today, was the last day to try to launch two sounding rocket from Poker Flat Research Range near Fairbanks - Alaska. Window for launch was 24th of March - 7th of April 2022. INCAA Mission Ion-Neutral during Active Aurora sounding rocket mission is to understand the interactions between the plasma and the neutral atmosphere during active aurora, and how this interaction affects energy deposition in the E-region ionosphere. They needed Active Aurora, clear skies on 3 places (Poker,Forth Yukon and Cold foot), sunlit Aurora, no moon and low wind… The First sounding rocket Black Brand 9 was two stage and carried TMA ( tri-methyl aluminum ) on one of the payload, that left its trail as it travels to a peak altitude of 186 miles. Vapor traces are similar chemicals used in firework and creating visible clouds , sometimes very colorful. It launch at 4:45am on 7th of April 2022 The second sounding rocket was Terrier-Improved Malmute and it launched 3minutes after the first one to traveled to 125 miles. It measured the temperature and density of the plasma around the aurora. Thank you Poker flat research range, Thank you to the count down voice Kathe, all the scientist, road block crew, The Principal Investigator Dr. Kaeppler/Clemson University and all in volved. Not only it was amazing to see, but we love the science and all those experiments for understanding more Auroras. Thank you And the aurora all night long didn't suck either :-) ~ Marketa
