Details:
After watching storms move through eastern Montana (which included a very impressive light show from a cluster of severe storms just to the south of Miles City, Montana at dusk), I went north of town to see if I could catch some TLEs off that same large complex of storms that had by then moved well into North Dakota. The skies were clearing then, and the plateaus across the Yellowstone from Miles City provide an excellent view east with little light pollution. Immediately after leaving town, the aurora became conspicuous. After 20 or so minutes, auroral activity died down. It was a great show, but sadly not much had been visible for TLEs. Just before packing up, we finally saw one! Some repositioning of the cameras, and the storm gave us a couple small rounds of red sprites before beginning to rain itself out over central North Dakota. The aurora were not overly visible in the eastern part of the sky (and were quite inactive at this time), but I was still excited to get my first image with both a the aurora and red sprites (it had been a few years since I managed to snag either by themselves even).
