Details:
Around 1 am on September 23, 2022 in Southcentral Alaska, I believe I saw S.T.E.V.E. (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement). It’s been shown that this type of atmospheric optical phenomenon forms differently than the aurora, but the color difference was not obvious to the naked eye so my first impression was it’s the southern edge of a quite heroic aurora display (Bz was tipped south for hours!). Then I did a 10-second camera exposure and was like, whoa, it’s purple, that’s signature STEVE!
