Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829) was a Norwegian mathematician who is considered one of the greatest talents in mathematics. At the age of 22, he submitted papers on fifth-degree equations that placed him among the world's leading mathematicians.
Of great importance was Abel's study trip to Europe, especially Berlin in 1825 - 1826. This was with support from the Norwegian government, which nevertheless could not offer Abel a position after his return to Norway.

Unfortunately he died of tuberculosis when he was 26, and a few days later he was offered a position at the University of Berlin.

Abel carried out works on the theory of algebraic equations, the theory of infinite series and the theory of elliptic functions, and is also known for the Abelian addition theorem on integrals of algebraic functions.

Eric Walter Elst (30 November 1936 – 2 January 2022) was a Belgian astronomer at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Uccle and a prolific discoverer of asteroids. As of 2026, the Minor Planet Center ranks him among the top 15 discoverers of minor planets with thousands of discoveries made at ESO's La Silla Observatory in northern Chile and at the Rozhen Observatory in Bulgaria 1986–2005.

The minor planet 3936 Elst, a stony Vestian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, roughly 6 kilometers in diameter, was named in his honour
