The Heart Nebula, also cataloged as IC 1805 or Sharpless 2-190, is a large emission nebula located approximately 7,500 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. Emission nebula featuring glowing ionized hydrogen gas and dark dust lanes. Named for its distinct resemblance to a human heart. Situated in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. Spans roughly 300 light-years across (about 150 arcminutes in the night sky. Contains a young open star cluster named Melotte 15, whose energetic stellar winds shape and erode the surrounding gas pillars. Discovered by astronomer William Herschel on November 3, 1787. Best observed from the Northern Hemisphere during autumn and winter (October to April. It has a low surface brightness, making it faint for direct visual observation (requiring dark skies and a large telescope), but it is a popular target for long-exposure astrophotography. 10/24/26.
